Fiber Insight is licensed to deliver globally-recognized CFCE, CONA, & CONE in North America by course developer Optical Technology Trainingn (OTT). All courses are live, five-day, & instructor-led with hands-on labs. All classes conclude with a final project and certification exam. Click on the images below to see upcoming course dates.
This comprehensive course begins with all fiber types you might encounter & how they interact. While fiber characterization goals vary, we focus on advanced infrastructure requirements. We explore what enables links to support different network demands—from single channel 1310nm to DWDM C-band long-haul amplified routes. We discuss limitations, management techniques & tests needed to determine IL, ORL, OTDR, CD, PMD, & SA. We apply this to fully characterize, document & analyze a fiber route.
CONA introduces optical networking & covers network infrastructure & transmission systems using direct detection. It is ideal for optical network planners, network operations staff & related roles. Direct detection supports applications from low data rates to up to 1.6Tb/s. CONA applies to a range of applications from single channel to DWDM, OTN & Ethernet. Multiple case studies are discussed leading to a network design assignment. CONA lays the foundation for and is a prerequisite for CONE.
To meet challenges of increasing data capacity & extending reach, network complexity has increased dramatically. Moving to higher data rates of 100/400/800 Gb/s requires a combination of advanced modulation formats (DP-QPSK, xQAM) & coherent detection with digital signal processing. With these optical advancements comes even more complex network impairments, system complexities (ROADMs) & environmental challenges. CONE covers these topic in detail, and incorporates real-world case studies.
We are licensed to offer optical networking courses developed by Optical Technology Training (OTT). OTT is globally recognized as both training and technical experts, with decades of experience developing comprehensive and continuously upgraded course content.
Attendees of our OTT courses receive access to OTT’s online resources available for one year following the training. OTT’s certification program is a career-building part for successful optical network engineers and management. Their materials are continuously updated to stay current and highly relevant to the dynamic optical networking industry.
This five-day course teaches test engineers to carry out full fiber characterization, including bi-directional OTDR testing, chromatic dispersion, Polarisation Mode Dispersion (PMD) and spectral attenuation measurements.
The course is critical for fiber optic test engineers, technicians, technical support, optical network project managers and supervisors, and hyperscalers or any company utilizing fiber characterization contractors.
The CFCE course will enable you to recognise why different tests are required and what information they should provide as well as how to carry them out. This course assumes that you have some previous experience of basic OTDR testing, but provides advanced OTDR training as well as CD and PMD training.

“CFCE has delivered more information than I knew was possible regarding fiber characterization and then some… It has made me an infinitely more confident and, I believe, competent engineer.”
Dan W. Network Engineer, Telecom Service Provider
“"I would recommend this course to anyone who is managing fiber optic crews, as well as anyone who is involved in testing or turning up fiber optic networks."
"I have learned a great deal and highly recommend this course AND instructor…" "This course is a deep dive into the next level beyond OTDR applied to fiber characterization and how that is accomplished."
Tom C., Communications Technician – UT/AZ Power Utility Cooperative
"I learned a lot. Not only about what I didn't know, but even on the topics I thought I did know."
Charles W., Network Infrastructure Manager - State Turnpike Authority
This 5-day certification course introduces fiber optics and optical networking planning, design and implementation of high capacity networks. It covers network infrastructure as well as transmission systems that use direct detection technology. These systems can provide very high capacity (up to 1.6Tb/s) Ethernet channels within data centres and commonly 100 & 400Gb/s data rates for metro data centre interconnect (DCI).
Through the use of design exercises and assignments including a case study, attendees will learn how to design optical networking systems to provide efficient and cost-effective solutions for many network applications. The CONA course provides the solid foundation, on which the advanced level Certified Optical Network Engineer course builds.
This course is a career development necessity for optical network planners, operations staff, datacenter operations and other network engineers, network managers, and optical communications or fibre optic specialists for data centres.

CONA has enabled … ”detailed discussions with our optical partner teams in regards to the physical plant that we are responsible for building and maintaining.”
Matt, Network Engineer, Hyperscaler
“Great training and great preparation for the CONE class. Thanks for the great teaching and the awesome documentation.”
Jean, Sr. Design Specialist,
Telecom Service Provider
”I have a better understanding of the fiber we work with and will look to dig deeper on the technical side of fiber characteristics and the networking side of our business. “
Brian, Deployment Mgr, Hyperscaler
The advanced 5-day CONE optical network certification course is designed for those dealing with demanding applications for optical network applications including subsea links, core networks, cloud and CDN applications, Data centre interconnects, financial networks and some national and educational research networks. Among others this includes optical network engineers, architects, designers, and planners.
CONE builds on the foundation provided by the CONA course. It deals with designing optical networks which use coherent transmission & digital signal processing, & tackles the requirements for designing high performance networks to meet key challenges such as increasing capacity, extending reach, increasing flexibility, controlling latency, providing quality of service and going open and interoperable, whilst also keeping costs under control and reducing electrical power consumption.
Because of the advanced nature of this course, successful completion of the CONA course is required prior to CONE.
”I learned a tremendous amount about
new technologies of high speed data signaling. This course was extremely useful. “
Tom, Senior Broadband Network Engineer, Municipal Service Provider
“CONE exceeded expectations!…”I would recommend to my colleagues and friends.”
SRB, Network Engineer, Hyperscaler
"…builds on what we learned in the CONA course and learn more about 100G/400G/800G”
Ash, Network Engineer, Financial Trader
